Being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) can be kinda lonesome.  Not only are we a minority – constituting an estimated 15 to 20 percent of the population – but most of us don’t walk around advertising our sensitivity.

So it’s easy for us to start feeling weird and different and like we don’t belong.  It’s easy for us to focus only on the downsides of our trait and not recognize the many upsides.

The cure?

Exposure to other HSPs.

So in this article, I wanted to share a list of documentaries, TED-talks, and podcasts about highly sensitive people.

Documentaries About Highly Sensitive People

Sensitive – The Untold Story

This hour-long documentary is based on the work of Dr. Elaine Aron, the psychologist who discovered the trait and authored The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You.  It describes what high sensitivity is all about and some of the scientific research that has been coming out.  And it features Alanis Morissette!  You can rent it on Amazon or buy the DVD here.

By the way, my non-HSP husband watched this documentary with me and found it interesting.  So if you have family members who may not entirely get what’s going on with you, this might be an easy way to give them an explanation.

Seminars By Elaine Aron

In addition to the documentary above, three seminars given by Elaine Aron have been turned into DVDs.  These are technically not documentaries, but I’m including them here, because they are really informative, especially if you have not read her books yet.

Elaine Aron: A Seminar on Learning How to Thrive as a Highly Sensitive Person. A Guide to Understanding your Sensitivity and Creating a Fuller, Richer Life (2011)

Elaine Aron A Talk On High Sensitivity (2013)

Elaine N. Aron: The Sensitive Advantage. A Seminar on Creating a Richer Life for Highly Sensitive Adults and Childen (2015)

Snippets of these are also available for free on YouTube.

TED Talks About Highly Sensitive People

I’m a huge fan of TED talks and there have been several about Highly Sensitive People as you can see below.

The Gentle Power Of Highly Sensitive People by Elena Herdieckerhoff

How To Make Sensitivity Your Superpower by Laura Karasinski

Are You Too Sensitive? Should You Change? by Marwa Azab

I’m also including Susan Cain’s TED talk here with the caveat that 30 percent of HSPs are actually extraverts.  But it’s still a great talk for all HSPs to see.

The Power Of Introverts By Susan Cain

The next listing is not a TED talk, but close enough. 🙂  It’s an interview with Dr. Ted Zeff, the author of The Highly Sensitive Person’s Survival Guide: Essential Skills for Living Well in an Overstimulating World and The Strong, Sensitive Boy.
